Stratosphere Dictates Weather: New Insights into Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

A team of researchers from Irkutsk and Tomsk summed up the results of three years of work under a grant from the Russian Science Foundation. Scientists from the Zuev Institute of Atmospheric Optics SB RAS and Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS studied how large–scale disturbances in the stratosphere affect the weather near the Earth's surface and even higher – in the mesosphere and thermosphere.

Open Doors Event at ISTP SB RAS

On April 27th, ISTP hosted its annual Open Doors event, organized by the Scientific Youth Council.
During the day, researchers, engineers, and programmers told students and schoolchildren about fundamental and applied challenges that the Institute deals with. They also highlighted key aspects of the National Heliogeophysical Complex managed by RAS. In addition, attendees gained valuable insights into the admissions process planned for 2025. Visitors took part in engaging competitions aimed at expanding knowledge and deepening understanding of near-space physics. All winners were given small souvenir prizes.

Scientific Team from ISTP SB RAS Wins RSF Grant

A project led by scientists from the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS focused on researching climate changes and effects of extreme geophysical disturbances in Earth's upper atmosphere has secured a grant from the Russian Science Foundation. A total of 4,491 applications were submitted to the competition titled “Conducting Fundamental and Exploratory Scientific Research by Individual Scientific Groups.” After expert assessment, 534 projects were supported, including the one from Irkutsk-based team comprising ten researchers, five of whom are under 39 years old. The project leader is Academician Gely Zherebtsov, an internationally recognized specialist in atmospheric and ionospheric research, lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere interactions, solar-terrestrial couplings, and space weather. The study will be conducted over a period of three years.

ISTP SB RAS hosts the 14th School Conference "Man and Space"

At the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS, the 14th scientific school conference "Man and Space" took place. Young researchers from various regions of Irkutsk Oblast and even Buryatia presented their projects prepared under the guidance of school teachers and scientists. Winners and prize-winners were awarded valuable gifts, additionally, they receive extra points when applying to the Faculty of Physics at Irkutsk State University.

Open Doors Event at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics on April 27

On April 27th, the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS will host an Open Doors Event for Prospective Students of Master’s Degree and Postgraduate Studies Programs. The event is organized by the Scientific Youth Council of the Institute. All interested individuals, including high school students, are invited to attend at the following address: Lermontova Street, 126A ("Gosuniversitet" public transport stop), starting at 11 am.

ISTP Receives Approval from Glavgosexpertiza on the Engineering Survey for Radar System Construction

The Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS has obtained a positive assessment from Glavgosexpertiza of Russia confirming that the results of the engineering surveys comply with the technical regulations for the upcoming construction of radar system. The facilities shall be constructed within the implementation of the expanded investment project "National Heliogeophysical Complex of RAS (NHC RAS). They are intended for studying the ionosphere, upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere, and near-Earth space.

Scientists from ISTP SB RAS Attribute Warm Winter in the Angara Region to Accelerated Global Warming

In January, the world's atmospheric data centers processed observational data for 2024. As a result, a new record was set for the average global temperature. According to Olga Zorkaltseva from the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS, such a temperature anomaly was expected ten years later. These processes did not bypass the territory of the Russian Federation.
